Transit Organizing 101 - Summer Training Series

Date:
Sat, Aug 4, 2018 - 11:30am to 2:00pm

City:

The Motor City Freedom Riders are rolling out our transit organizing training program this summer. This is a free, three-part training that is open to the public. Please register at the ticketing link, as we will have limited space.

After our pilot program this fall, we have reorganized the training curriculum and decided to build around it a funded fellowship program. Any bus riders who complete all three parts of our training can become Route Captains. Route captains will be compensated with unlimited monthly bus passes for their work acting as the face of the Motor City Freedom Riders on their bus route. They will be in charge of bringing new members into the organization, collecting petitions, distributing information, forming relationships, and any other forms of outreach to other riders. We hope this program will go a long way toward growing the movement and building power for bus riders.

The training program itself is intended to pass on necessary knowledge about the transit system—its history and politics—and the organizing skills we will need to transform it. Parts 2 and 3 of the training will be focused on transit campaigns, but the material is directly applicable to other organizing contexts.

Part 1: The Politics of Transit
Saturday, June 23, 11:30 am – 2 pm (This training will also be repeated on Saturday, August 4, at the same time.)
TechTown Detroit, 440 Burroughs St, Detroit, MI 48202

Why doesn’t metro Detroit have more public transit? The automakers are only part of the story. To win the fight for transit, we need to understand the forces that have held us back, and how racial and economic inequality operate in the political system of our region. We also need to know the basics of how transit agencies are funded and governed in our region to navigate that landscape strategically.

Part 2: Running Strategic Campaigns
Saturday, June 23, 11:30 am — 2 pm (This training will also be repeated on Saturday, August 11, at the same time.)
TechTown Detroit, 440 Burroughs St, Detroit, MI 48202

As we're building people power, what do we do with it? We need targeted campaigns to take on the political establishment of the region and clear the path to expanded public transit. This training will delve into how we can build effective and strategic campaigns - and win!

Part 3: Building Power for Transit Riders
Date and location TBD, will take place the first week of July. (This training will also be repeated on Saturday, August 25, from 11:30 am to 2 pm.)

Given the power we’re up against, the fight for transit will require building people power. This training will cover the basics of how we grow our movement through community organizing and relationship-building.

We hope you'll join us, even if you can only attend one or two of these sessions.
