WICIR hosts the Coalition of Immokalee Workers

Wed, Sep 20, 2017 - 7:00pm to 9:00pm

Join WICIR, Washtenaw Solidarity with Farmworkers, and the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW) for an evening centered around learning about farmworker labor issues.

The CIW is embarking on a tour of education focused on raising awareness about conditions in the agricultural industry — especially for women — and amplifying the national boycott of Wendy’s. Wendy's is the only major fast food corporation to refuse to partner with farmworkers; they have chosen to move their purchasing of tomatoes to farms in Mexico where child labor and sexual assault go unchecked, and where a forced labor case was prosecuted only a few years back. The call for Wendy’s to join the Fair Food Program recently saw a surge of activity at Ohio State University, where 20 students fasted for one week, sparking a national rolling fast in which hundreds of students/community members at over a dozen universities participated (including students and community members from SE Michigan).

The Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW) is a Florida farmworker-led human rights organization. The CIW's innovative approach has been extraordinarily successful in improving wages and working conditions for farmworkers.CIW’s work started in 1993 and has been reinforced with the creation of a national consumer network since 2000. The CIW’s national Campaign for Fair Food educates consumers on the issue of farm labor exploitation – its causes and solutions – and forges alliances between farmworkers and consumers in an effort to enlist the market power of major corporate buyers to help end that exploitation.

This event will be wheelchair/walker accessible and have Spanish to English translation.

The Washtenaw Interfaith Coalition for Immigrant Rights (WICIR) is an ever-expanding organization of morally conscious people, who are members of numerous community groups and faith-based organizations. We are diverse in race and ethnicity, national origin, language, gender, age, abilities, gender identities, sexual orientations, and socio-economic class status, and immigration status.

Washtenaw Solidarity with Farmworkers is an organization based in Washtenaw County which advocates for farmworkers, racial justice, immigrant rights, and putting an end to wage theft and labor exploitation. WSF came together to organize in support of the national Coalition of Immokalee Workers campaigns and has since expanded to learning about and organizing around local farmworker initiatives.
