You Can't Justify Injustice: Rally for Ciaeem Slaton

Date:
Wed, Oct 4, 2017 - 3:45pm to 5:45pm

City:

On Tuesday, September 26, 16-year-old Ann Arbor resident Ciaeem Slaton was violently restrained (pinned to the ground, with the officer kneeling on his neck and back while pulling out his taser) by AAPD's Officer Marrow at the Blake Transit Center and given a "trespass" which stops him from riding the bus for one year. All of this because he wasn't carrying ID. The bus is Ciaeem's way to school and other activities.

We are gathering to say, in the words of Ciaeem's friend DaQuann, "You can't justify injustice." We will be marching from the Transit Center at 4PM to hold a speak out at another location.

DEMANDS:
- Drop all charges and consequences from this incident
- Public apology from AAPD and Officer Marrow
- Compensation for injury to Ciaeem and his family

SEEKING:
- Change to and publication of use-of-force policies on youth
- An end to police presence at the transit center, replaced by a community based conflict resolution model rather than a punitive approach
- Eliminating the ability of individual officers to have discretion to end a person's ability to use the AATA
