Surveillance: Know Your Rights & Community Discussion

Tue, Aug 28, 2018 - 7:00pm to 9:00pm

City:

Among the top issues of concern for the Arab and Muslim communities is surveillance, the idea that our communities are constantly being watched and monitored. Since 9/11, the surveillance of Muslim communities has led to the disentigration of community trust, the repression of political activism and organizing, the chilling of freedom of speech and religion, and the alteration of community relationships.

THE MAJORITY OF AMERICANS DO NOT KNOW A MUSLIM.
Today, issues surrounding American Muslims are central in our political discourse, policy debates and popular culture. Yet most Americans say they don’t know a Muslim and, according to media content analysis, more than 80% of media coverage of Islam and Muslims in the United States is negative. This opens the door for a narrow media image to distort public perceptions of this diverse community.
