Charter Schools and Public Education

Date:
Tue, Sep 26, 2017 - 6:00pm to 8:00pm

The rapid expansion of charter schools has dramatically transformed the educational landscape in Michigan and around the country. As more and more children attend these schools, and more and more public money is spent outside the traditional public school system, ordinary Americans are left to wonder what this means for themselves and their children. Who is behind these schools? To what extent are they accountable to the public? What is their relationship to the longstanding issues of inequality and racial segregation in American public schools?

Ann Arbor teachers and staff are hurting. Over the last decade they have endured one pay cut or freeze after another to keep AAPS not only solvent, but strong. Further, they have also had to cover thousand of dollars of increased healthcare costs and retirement contributions, and many are bringing home almost $10,000 less per year than they did a decade ago.
