Press Conference on Sanctuary

Date:
Wed, Sep 6, 2017 - 11:00am to 12:00pm

City:

The Church of the Good Shepherd, United Church of Christ, joint with Washtenaw Congregational Sanctuary, is hosting a press conference to announce resistance to the Trump administration’s plans to deport millions of immigrants, which would separate families and devastate our communities. Since the 1980’s, the Sanctuary Movement has answered the call to welcome the stranger by providing safe haven to immigrants and refugees in need. Since President Trump’s election, faith communities have taken a strong stand to oppose increased enforcement by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

#MichiganForAll #WashtenawForAll
We need a strong showing of opposition to HB 4105 and HB 4334, which are currently in the Local Government Committee in the MI State House. These bills would:
-Prohibit sanctuary cities and counties and require local police officers to ask a person about their immigration status if they suspect that they might be an immigrant.
-Burden local governments and officials with additional costs, reporting requirements, and threats of litigation and penalties.

We will remain a sanctuary city!

Date:
Wed, Apr 12, 2017 - 6:30pm to 9:30pm

City:

After three months of consistent pressure and input from residents in Lansing, the city council took the largely symbolic action of declaring Lansing a sanctuary city. Not even a week later we were warned that the council would consider rescinding that action. Here we are eight days after that declaration: the business-first minded members of the council have bowed to economic pressure from the racist conservatives in the Lansing and Michigan chambers of commerce.
