Court Hearing for Ded Rranxburgaj

Tue, Nov 13, 2018 - 1:00pm to 5:00pm

The campaign to Keep the Rranxburgaj Family Together, Central United Methodist Church, and Michigan United are asking all supporters of the Rranxburgaj Family to attend this public hearing, which is a vital moment in the family's campaign to stay together.

This summer, Ded Rranxburgaj's attorney filed a complaint in federal court against four leaders in ICE and DHS. The complaint was that they failed to adjudicate Ded's case based on its merits, instead only making a decision about his case after he was forced to take sanctuary at Central United Methodist Church and after they labeled him a "fugitive" for doing so. As supporters of the family know, Ded's deportation would mean that his wife, Flora, who has had Multiple Sclerosis for 12 years and needs Ded every day as her primary care provider, would be abandoned here in the U.S. It has been eight months since Ded was supposed to be deported and since he took sanctuary from deportation. In these eight months, ICE has not taken one step in the right direction of keeping this family together. The attorney's complaint points to the negligence of ICE and DHS in their case.

The federal government's lawyer filed a motion to dismiss the complaint. The judge presiding over the case has set a public hearing date in court. This is huge. While the judge won't be able to declare Ded's freedom or cancel the order of deportation, the judge will be able to rule that the complaint is valid and that ICE and DHS need to re-adjudicate Ded's petition to stay in the U.S. There is hope that ICE will negotiate with us to allow Ded to stay before the hearing even happens, and there is also hope that ICE will abandon their intent to deport Ded if the judge rules in the family's favor. To help convince them, we need as many people as possible to show support for this family.

The hearing will be November 13th, 2:30pm. We ask supporters and press to attend with us. We will be meeting at Central United Methodist Church at 1:00pm and we will walk to the courthouse together. More details about the event will be posted on the event page as the court date approaches. Please consider taking the afternoon off from work in order to attend this hearing.
