Redesigning Civilization: Starting in Your Neighborhood

Mon, Jul 8, 2019 - 6:30pm to 8:00pm

Renowned Ann Arbor regenerative community advocate Matt Grocoff and co-creator of Veridian at County Farm will discuss some of the world's greatest challenges and how we can start to solve them at the local level. You'll learn about Matt's own net zero energy retrofit of his family's 118 year old Old West Side home. And he will discuss plans for the new Veridian at County Farm neighborhood and its quest to become the world's first Living Community Challenge certified neighborhood, the world's most rigorous green building standard.

The standard development model is deeply flawed. We subsidize developers by allowing them to avoid the cost of their negative impacts. As a community we pay the price for formulaic development when it pollutes our air and water, degrades our social systems and mental health, increases carbon emissions, and weakens local ecosystems.

We will be defined not by the unsparing consequences of climate change, but by how we respond to them as our window of opportunity for action closes.

This talk will use Veridian at County Farm as an example of how we can rethink everything we know about how we create truly sustainable neighborhoods that are good for all people and other living things throughout time.
