On the morning of February 16, organizers with Michigan Abolition Alliance shut down the Wayne County Commissioners’ meeting, demanding that neither the city nor Dan Gilbert build a new jail complex in Wayne County, and more broadly, calling for the abolition of the prison-industrial complex as a whole. Gilbert’s company, Rock Ventures LLC, is trying to make a deal with the county to take over the unfinished jail site downtown in order to build a soccer stadium in its place, and build a separate jail facility elsewhere.
