Shut Down North Lake Correctional Facility
No For-Profit Immigrant Detention Camps in Michigan
GEO Group—the largest private prison corporation in the US—will attempt to open Michigan’s first for-profit detention center for immigrants in Baldwin, Michigan on October 1st.
GEO Group is an industry leader in human-rights abuses and deaths at its facilities. A federal judge described their facilities as, “a cesspool of unconstitutional and inhuman acts and conditions”.
GEO has been sued multiple times for forcing detainees to work for food, water and toiletries.

Michigan is one of 4 states that still automatically charges 17 year olds as adults, no matter the offense. Youthful offenders are subjected to psychological and physical abuse in adults jails and some prisons. Furthermore, they don't recieve rehabilitative services in the adult system that would otherwise be provided via family courts. If you'd like to know more, please join us.

Getting a conviction “expunged” means that it is removed from your public criminal record. If you get a conviction expunged, you can legally state on any applications for school, employment, public benefits, or housing that you have never been convicted of that crime.

The Day of Empathy is a national day of action to generate empathy on a massive scale for the millions of Americans behind bars and their loved ones. On March 5, 2019, Americans impacted by the criminal justice system nationwide and their allies will meet with lawmakers to share their stories and experiences. To reform our criminal justice system, we must first humanize and empathize with those who are affected by it.
Without empathy, we cannot achieve meaningful policy changes that keep our communities safe, our families whole, and our economy strong.

Heard this?
“We have a blanket ‘no felony’ policy”
“If you served time in the last 20 years, we won’t take you”
“We don’t even look an application if you have a criminal record”
"Arrested? You can't live here"

We hope you can join us for this important discussion.
The ACLU of Michigan in collaboration with Michigan Council on Crime and Delinquency (MCCD) and Michigan League of Public Policy (MLPP) are advocating for legislation to raise the age of juvenile jurisdiction from 17 to 18 and remove all youth under the age of 18 from adult correctional facilities and relocate them to facilities which can adequately serve their developmental needs.
